HC Deb 07 December 1981 vol 14 c289W
Sir Patrick Wall

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many job vacancies there are in the Hull and Beverley areas, respectively.

Mr. Peter Morrison

The following table gives the numbers of notified vacancies remaining unfilled at employment offices and careers offices in the areas specified at 6 November.

At employment offices At careers offices
Hull employment office area 445 26
Beverley employment office area 35 3

The statistics relate only to vacancies notified to employment offices and careers offices; vacancies notified to employment offices are estimated to be about one-third of all vacancies in the country as a whole. Because of possible duplication the figures for employment offices and careers offices should not be added together.

The number of vacancies unfilled at a particular date takes no account of the flow of vacancies being notified, filled or withdrawn during the preceding month, which would reflect activity more closely. For example, during the twelve month period to 4 September 7,947 people were placed in jobs by employment offices and 767 by careers offices in the Hull and Beverley employment office areas. It is estimated that the public employment service accounts for about one in four of all placings.
