HC Deb 03 December 1981 vol 14 c222W
Mr. Cormack

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the estimated total cost of all higher education, including grants to students, in the United Kingdom in 1980–81; and to what extent this amount differs from the plans contained in the March 1980 public expenditure White Paper.

Mr. Waldegrave

The figures for the areas for which my right hon. Friend is responsible are as follows:

£ million (outturn prices)
Universities' recurrent expenditure (Great Britain) 1,015.3
Mandatory awards (England and Wales) 662.9
Non-university higher education (England) 447.7
2,125.9

Estimates for total capital expenditure on higher education in 1980–81 are not yet available.

The total of £2,125.9 million is close to the level planned in the March 1980 public expenditure White Paper—Cmnd. 7841.
