asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what are the total numbers of persons receiving (a) unemployment allowance, (b) earnings-related benefits, (c) subsistence allowances and (d) any other allowance.

I refer the hon. Member to the half-yearly summary of unemployment benefit statistics, November 1980, a copy of which is in the library. Table 2 of the summary gives the latest available figures showing the benefit position of unemployed claimants, including entitlement to earnings-related supplement. Corresponding figures for May and November 1981 will not be available, because of the effects of industrial action.
