HC Deb 27 October 1980 vol 991 c104W
Mr. S. C. Silkin

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment, further to his reply to the hon. Member for Isle of Wight, (Mr. Ross) Official Report, 28 July, col. 534, what substances are covered by the term primary whale products; and if he will also seek to ban the importation of secondary whale products.

Mr. King:

The primary products covered by the draft Community regulation are whale meat and offals—whether or not fit for human consumption; whale meat, whale meat extracts and whale juices; whalebone—if not cut to shape; whale oils and fats, and spermaceti.

The draft regulation also lists leather treated with whale or other cetacean oil. Negotiations are proceeding on the inclusion of leather products treated with whale oil for which the United Kingdom has been pressing and I will make the conclusions available to the House as soon as agreement has been reached.
