Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many young persons aged 18 years and under there are in the Stockport travel-to-work area who have never had a job; and if he will provide separate figures for each careers office and jobcentre at the latest date for which figures are available and comparable figures for 1979.

[pursuant to his reply, 8 August 1980, c.411]: At 10 July 1980 the numbers of young people aged 18 years and under registered as unemployed at the Stockport careers office and the Stockport employment office who had not been in employment since completing full-time education were 1,493 and 40, respectively. The corresponding figures at 12 July 1979 were 1,029 and 120.

NOTE: The Government and the Manpower Services Commission have undertaken that all 1980 school leavers who remain unemployed and all young people who have been unemployed for 12 months or more will he offered places on the youth opportunities programme by the end of March 1981.
