§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Prime Minister when she expects to receive the report of the committee of inspection into the efficiency of the Civil Service in general and the Civil Service and Treasury Departments in particular; why the committee consists of Mr. M. V. Hawtin, of the Treasury, and Mr. J. K. Moore of the Civil Service Department; and what consideration was given to the appointment to the committee of persons not connected with the Departments being investigated.
§ The Prime Minister:I have not commissioned a general study on the efficiency of the Civil Service; but I have asked a 83W small team of officials, from the two Departments involved, to examine the case for and against, and the implications of, more closely integrating the Treasury and the Civil Service Department. I expect its report soon. The factual and analytical material it produces will be published. I hope also to learn the views of the Select Committee on the Treasury and Civil Service, which has been considering this subject.
