HC Deb 24 November 1980 vol 994 c11W
31. Mr. Hardy

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what volume of steel was produced and sold in the United Kingdom during each of the last three months; and what proportion of total production capacity this represents.

Mr. Adam Butler

Sales of finished steel by United Kingdom steel producers in the last three months for which figures are available were

  • July 1.12 million tonnes
  • August 0.71 million tonnes
  • September 0.86 million tonnes
and this represents a fall of 30 per cent, on the average level for the same three months of last year.

Crude steel production by United Kingdom steel producers in the last three months for which figures are available were

  • August 0.98 million tonnes
  • September 0.82 million tonnes
  • October 1.14 million tonnes
and this represents a fall of 46 per cent, on the average level for the same three months of last year.

It is not possible to be precise about levels of steel-making capacity because of the many changes which are constantly taking place. On the basis of best estimates, however, the levels of crude steel production in the months of August, September and October represent respectively in terms of weekly averages 50 per cent., 40 per cent, and 45 per cent, of total installed capacity and 65 per cent., 55 per cent, and 60 per cent, of manned capacity.
