HC Deb 24 November 1980 vol 994 c18W
Mr. Les Huckfield

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether any police authorities or chief constables have given instructions that police vehicles are not to travel more than a specified number of miles during one operating shift; under what recommendation from his Department this has taken place; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Brittan

These matters are for individual chief officers of police: and the Home Office has made no such recommendation. Information about steps taken in each police force is not readily available. I have no doubt, however, that chief officers keep under review the use of resources, including vehicles, and seek to combine effectiveness with appropriate economy.
