HC Deb 24 November 1980 vol 994 c15W
Mr. McQuarrie

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will list the comparative cost of one therm of gas and one unit of electricity between the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Norway; and if he will make this available in the Official Report.

Mr. Norman Lamont

I shall reply to my hon. Friend as soon as possible.

Mr. Gwilym Roberts

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what is the latest figure available for the cost of producing one gallon of oil from coal; how this compares with the cost of refining a similar gallon from crude oil; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. John Moore

Latest estimates put the production cost of a gallon of motor spirit from United Kingdom coal in a notional large commercial plant at about 25 per cent, higher than that of an equivalent gallon refined from natural crude.
