asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list the charges that each local education authority is making for school meals as from September.

According to information given by authorities the charges made are as follows where meals are supplied on a fixed-price basis:

Borders 35p
Central 35p
Dumfries and Galloway 40p
Fife 35p
Grampian 42p
Highland 40p
Lothian 35p
Strathclyde 40p
Tayside 40p
Orkney 35p
Shetland 35p
Western Isles 35p

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list the local education authorities in Scotland which provide free school meals (a) only for children from families in receipt of supplementary benefit or family income supplement, (b) for children who qualify under the former income eligibility limits and (c) from children who fall between these two tests.

Inquiries made by my Department indicate that education authorities are currently providing free school meals as follows:

  1. (a) Authorities whose basic policy is to provide free meals only for children whose parents receive supplementary benefit or family income supplement:
    • Grampian
    • Highland
    • Tayside
  2. (b) Authorities using former statutory income scale or an uprated version of that scale:
    • Central
    • Fife
    • Lothian
    • Strathclyde
    • Orkney
    • Shetland
    • Western Isles
  3. (c) Authorities providing free meals on the basis of policies falling between (a) and (b)
    • Borders
    • Dumfries and Galloway
