§ Mr. Jim LesterThe numbers of proposed redundancies for the Wolverhampton travel-to-work area which have been notified to my Department under the redundancy handling provisions of the Employment Protection Act 1975 from (a) May 1979 to October 1980 and (b) January 1980 to October 1980 are as follows:
There is no statutory duty to notify my Department when redundancies do not take place.276W
- (a) 14,856 employees at 276 establishments.
- (b) 12,417 employees at 238 establishments.
to differences in coverage, methods of compilation, and concept. The rates for England and Wales are based on the number of employees (employed and unemployed) which differ from the working population in that they exclude the self-employed and members of Her Majesty's Forces.
I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that the numbers of redundancies reported to it as due to occur in the Wolverhampton travel-to-work area from (a) May 1979 to October 1980 and (b) January 1980 to October 1980 are as follows:
- (a) 6,080 employees at 73 establishments.
- (b) 3,145 employees at 53 establishments.
These figures are provisional, since some redundancies are reported late. Both the Department of Employment and the Manpower Services Commission figures are for redundancies involving 10 or more employees.
