HC Deb 13 November 1980 vol 992 cc340-1W
Mr. Kilfedder

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether he will investigate the reasons why the South Eastern Education and Library Board has failed to provide sufficient grammar school places in the North Down area to take account of its situation as a developing and expanding area.

Mr. Goodhart

Each education and library board has a statutory duty to secure that there are available in its area a sufficient number of secondary schools to afford for all pupils opportunity for education offering such variety of instruction and training as may be desirable in view of their different ages, abilities and aptitudes. The Department of Education for Northern Ireland has no evidence that the South Eastern Education and Library Board has failed to fulfil its duty in relation to the provision of secondary education in the North Down area.
