§ Mr. Michael McGuireasked the Minister of Transport what procedures are carried out by his Department for checking that lorries, vans and other vehicles carrying goods of any kind are in a safe condition and are not overweight when travelling on the highway.
§ Mr. FowlerRegular checks on the mechanical condition and proper loading of goods vehicles are made at the roadside and at ports by my Department's examiners. In addition, the vehicles are subjected to the annual mechanical inspection and test for roadworthiness.
Vehicles found to be seriously overloaded or mechanically unsound are prohibited from moving until the situation has been remedied. Prosecutions are also mounted in appropriate cases.
