HC Deb 13 November 1980 vol 992 cc377-8W
Mr. George Robertson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will publish a detailed analysis of the populations served by each of the colleges of education in Scotland.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

This information is not available. Colleges of education are under no obligation to give preference to applicants from particular areas.

Mr. George Robertson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many staff will be required at other colleges of education for the present level of in-service education for teachers to be maintained in the Lanark division of Strathclyde region; and what the extra cost of that staff will be.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

This will depend on the precise methods by which our decisions are implemented. I do not wish to anticipate the outcome of our discussions with the colleges and the other interests concerned.

Mr. George Robertson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will publish in the Official Report a full breakdown of the numbers under the heading "Other Students" in table 1 of his document "Future of the Colleges of Education in Scotland".

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

I shall write to the hon. Member as soon as possible.

Mr. George Robertson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will explain the reduction in student numbers between 1979–80 and 1980–81, as published in column 3 of table 1 of the document "Future of the Colleges of Education in Scotland".

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

The figures for academic sessions after 1979–80 are estimates which have been rounded down to the nearest hundred, and do not imply any expected reduction in student numbers.
