Mr. Hardy

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many young people were unemployed at the latest date for which figures are available; and how this compares with the position one year earlier.

At 9 October 1980 there were 454,117 young people under 20 years of age registered as unemployed in the United Kingdom. The corresponding figure at 11 October 1979 was 266,879.

Work experience and training opportunities will be available for these young people under the youth opportunities programme, which the Secretary of State announced on 14 February would be
