HC Deb 04 November 1980 vol 991 cc503-4W
36. Sir Anthony Meyer

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what representations he has received regarding the problems created by the make-up pay given to redundant British Steel Corporation employees and the practice of certain employers of taking on such employees at very low wages.

Mr. Jim Lester

My right hon. Friend has received no representations other than my hon. Friend's letter of 30 July about the position in Shotton, to which I replied on 2 September. The Manpower Services Commission, which is responsible for the public employment service. tells me that it has no evidence that the iron and steel employees re-adaptation benefit scheme is causing undue problems or that many such workers are accepting employment at very low wages.
