HC Deb 03 November 1980 vol 991 cc455-6W
Mr. Churchill

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science by how much Her Majesty's Government have increased or decreased expenditure on education compared to the planned expenditure in Cmnd. 7439, expressed at 1980 constant prices, taking outturn figures for the year 1979–80, the best estimate of outturn of 1980–81 and planned expenditure to 1982–83.

Mr. Mark Carlisle

Table 5.8 of Cmnd. 7841 shows the following planned reductions in expenditure on education, science, arts and libraries in Great Britain compared with the last Government's plans in Cmnd. 7439:

£m 1979 Survey Prices
1979–80 50
1980–81 530
1981–82 800
1982–83 970

The outturn in 1979–80 was very close to the Cmnd. 7841 figure. No reliable estimate of outturn for 1980–81 is yet available. Any revisions to the plans in Cmnd. 7841 for 1981–82 and 1982–83 will be announced in due course.
