HC Deb 21 May 1980 vol 985 cc248-9W
42. Mr. Edwin Wainwright

asked the Minister of Transport what were the amounts spent on roadways in England and Wales during each of the past four years; and what is the estimated figure for the current year.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

Expenditure on construction and maintenance of motorways and trunk roads and local roads in England in each of the years 1976–77 to 1979–80 was £1,405 million, £1,094 million £1,123 million and provisionally, £1,185 million respectively. Planned expenditure on motorways and trunk roads in 1980–81 is £393 million, but this is subject to an overriding cash limit. Expenditure on local roads will depend on the decisions of local authorities. All figures are at 1979 survey prices.

Expenditure on Welsh roads is the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales.
