HL Deb 06 May 1980 vol 408 c1640WA
Lord BROCKWAY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will state the conclusions of the UNESCO conference on a "new world information and communications order" which concluded in Paris on 22nd April, and what was the contribution of the British representation.

The SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN and COMMONWEALTH AFFAIRS (Lord Carrington)

The UNESCO Inter-Governmental Conference for Co-operation on Activities, Needs and Programmes for Communication Development met in Paris on 14th to 21st April. It adopted by consensus a recommendation for the establishment, within the framework of UNESCO, of an International Programme for the Development of Communication. The recommendation will be submitted to the General Conference of UNESCO this autumn. A copy of the recommendation will be placed in the Library.

The British delegation played a full part in the negotiations leading to the consensus.
