HC Deb 02 May 1980 vol 983 cc714-5W
Mr. Peter Robinson

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what consultations, if any, he has had with his counterpart in the Republic of Ireland concerning plans by the Republic of Ireland's television service to beam its programmes into Northern Ireland via a transmitter on the Louth-Armagh border at Claremont Cam; and what action he will take.

Mr. Brittan

I have been asked to reply.

The Republic of Ireland has notified the United Kingdom Administration of its proposal to increase the power of its Carlingford transmitter at Claremont Cam. Officials of the United Kingdom and Irish Administrations are examining the technical problems of reconciling the Irish proposal with the United Kingdom's requirement for the power transmitted in the direction of Northern Ireland to be restricted in order to protect the development of the United Kingdom's UHF television coverage there.
