HL Deb 17 March 1980 vol 407 c155WA
Lord ALLEN of ABBEYDALE

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will give the number of patients who on 31st December last were detained in regional secure units set up in pursuance of the recommendations of the Committee on Mentally Abnormal Offenders, and whether they will also give an estimate of the number of places likely to be available in such units on 31st December next.

Lord CULLEN of ASHBOURNE

There are no permanent regional secure units yet but at 31st December 1979 there were over 140 places in interim secure units: details of the number of patients detained in them on that date is not available centrally. There are likely to be 30 places available in permanent units on 31st December 1980 but the increase in the number of interim places available will depend on developments in each health region: it is not possible to give an estimate at this stage.
