Footnotes

1. Iceland has no Armed Forces.

2. Rank titles given are United Kingdom Army ranks and their NATO equivalents. However, nominally equivalent ranks may not have equivalent responsibilities.

3. The figures quoted are for basic pay only and do not take account of other benefits which vary widely as between countries and ranks (for example, privates in Italy, Greece and Turkey receive free food and accommodation). Where appropriate, the figures are the mid-point of a pay range.

4. In Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands and Norway additional pay is authorised for extra-duty hours and for weekend working.

5. The use of conscripts by some countries, widely differing costs of living, and varying legal and social contexts make direct comparisons between rates of pay in different countries inappropriate.
