§ Mr. Meacherasked the Attorney-General if he will list the number of complaints made to the Director of Public Prosecutions in each year since 1970 where the subject of the complaint had died after release from police custody and where the complainant alleged that injuries received whilst in police custody were responsible for, or had contributed to, the person's subsequent death.
§ The Attorney-GeneralThe information requested was included in the answer given to the hon. Member on 22 February 1980—[c.393–94.] It is not within my knowledge whether those shown on the list in that answer as having died in hospital were technically in police custody at the time or not. It is believed that two of the deaths listed in 1974, one in 1976, one in 1978 and one in 1979 occurred after release from police custody. The Director has received no complaints relevant to the hon. 567W Member's question which were not summarised in my former answer.
