HC Deb 07 March 1980 vol 980 c370W
Mr Cryer

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what were the number of redundancies in the textile industry in West Yorkshire declared in 1979 and (a) January, and (b) February 1980.

Mr. Jim Lester

[pursuant to his reply, 4 March 1980, c. 109]: 2,736 redundancies were known to have taken place in the textile industry in West Yorkshire in 1979. In January and February 1980 the figures were 464 and 912 respectively. This information is not fully comprehensive, however, as there is no statutory obligation on employers to provide my Department with details of actual redundancies.
