§ Mr. PymCentral records of civilian strengths are available only from 1964, when the unified Ministry of Defence was set up. The numbers in April 1964 compared with those at the latest available date are as follows:
have been, since 1 June 1979, in the numbers of civil servants employed in Germany in support of the British forces stationed there; and what percentage of the previous total this represents in the case of each grade concerned.
§ Mr. PattieThe total reduction in United Kingdom-based and locally engaged staff employed by the MOD in Germany between 1 June 1979 and 1 January 1980 amounted to 1,100 or 4 per cent. Details on a grade-by-grade basis are not readily available, but in terms of broad groupings the percentage variations are as follows:
United Kingdom-based staff (Strength at 1 January 1980—2,200) Teachers 5 per cent. Technical / Scientific / Medical 4 per cent. Others Nil Locally engaged staff (Strength at 1 January 1980—27,900) Non-industrial 1 per cent. Industrial 5 per cent. In addition, reductions of 97 were made in PSA staff in Germany working on defence account.
