HC Deb 05 March 1980 vol 980 cc246-7W
Mr. Speller

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will make a statement upon the future of the livestock quality control scheme.

Mr. Peter Walker

Statutory livestock quality control applies only to bulls used for artificial insemination. On 28 February, in a written reply to a question by my hon. Friend the Member for Northwich (Mr. Goodlad) about the future of controls over the artificial insemination of cattle, I announced new arrangements to provide a wider choice in the selection of dairy bulls for use in AI, with provision for greater involvement of the industry in the longer term.—[Vol. 797, c.685–88.] I also announced that revised regulations are proposed to take effect from 1 May next which will further safeguard the interests of those who purchase semen.
