HC Deb 05 March 1980 vol 980 cc259-60W
Mr. Foster

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many adults are currently participating in adult literacy programmes in the Northern region, the Durham county council area and the Bishop Auckland constituency.

Dr. Boyson

The latest figures available from the adult literacy unit, which collects returns each year from local education authorities, show that the total number of students participating in adult literacy provision in February 1979 was in the Northern region—the counties of Cleveland, Cumbria, Durham, Northumberland and the metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear—3,163; and in Durham 468. Statistics are not collected on a constituency basis but for the district of Bishop Auckland, the figure was 82.
