HC Deb 04 March 1980 vol 980 cc114-5W
Mr. Rooker

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what steps he proposes to take and what representations he has received in connection with the practice of certain shops of individually pricing potatoes.

Mrs. Sally Oppenheim

I have received no representations about this practice, but the sale of potatoes is governed by the Weights and Measures Act 1963 (Potatoes) Order 1978, which requires that potatoes which are not prepacked must, when sold by retail, be sold only by net weight. This implies that the net weight must be made known to the buyer before the purchase price is agreed. The enforcement of this legislation is the responsibility of local weights and measures authorities.
