asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what steps he is taking to prevent the risk of extinction of the Hull fishing industry.

Mr. Peter Walker

I am well aware of the problems facing all sectors of the fishing industry. I am urgently considering the many proposals for action to meet these problems which have been put to the Government in recent weeks.

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what steps he is taking to get agreement with the Canadian Government for the Hull distant water fleet to catch 100,000 tons of cod in their coastal waters on similar lines to the German distant water vessels.

Negotiations are in progress for a long-term framework agreement between the European Community and Canada which would allow our fishermen, and those of the other member States, to carry on fishing in the Canadian waters for fish surplus to the requirements of Canada. I do not, however, expect the quantities of cod or other species of fish which might be made available to all EEC fishermen to amount to as much as the 100,000 tonnes mentioned by the hon. Member.
