HC Deb 03 March 1980 vol 980 cc45-6W
27. Mr. Stephen Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Trade who are the registered owners of the "Aeolian Sky". with whom is the boat and her cargo insured; and what is the result of his Department's examination of the vessel's dangerous goods cargo manifest.

Mr. Tebbit

The registered owners of the Greek general cargo vessel "Aeolian Sky" at the time of her sinking were Proteus Maritime Co. SA of Piraeus, Greece. The hull and machinery of the vessel were insured on the open market in London and New York. Cover in respect of the shipowner's legal liability to third parties is provided by the West of England Shipowners' Mutual Insurance Association Ltd.

Insurance of the cargo was the responsibility of the respective shippers or consignees.

On the nature of the cargo, I refer to my reply to my hon. Friend the Member for Christchurch and Lymington (Mr. Adley) on 29 February.

30. Mr. Adley

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will make a statement on his Department's recent activities relating to the "Aeolian Sky".

Mr. Tebbit

My Department arranged a diving survey which was carried out last week to determine the present condition of the ship and its cargo. The result of inquiries into the origins of items and cargo recently washed ashore on the south coast were given in my answer to my hon. Friend on 29 February and those into questions of ownership and insurance in my earlier answer today to the hon. Member for Isle of Wight (Mr. Ross).
