HL Deb 25 June 1980 vol 410 cc1713-4WA
Baroness DAVID

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How they arrived at the figure of £1.5 million as the cost of a concession to Greek overseas students in the academic year 1980–81, as stated in col. 1420 of Lords Hansard for 4th June.

Baroness YOUNG

The figure of £1.5 million is the estimate of the cost in the financial year 1980–81 of treating Greek students as EEC students for tuition fee purposes from the beginning of the academic year 1980–81. It represents the difference between the level of expected fee income at the subsidised overseas rates in the case of continuing students and full cost fees in the case of new students and the level of fee income which would be received at the home rates of fee. The number of Greek students used in the calculation was based on the number of overseas students assumed in previous public expenditure plans.
