HC Deb 24 June 1980 vol 987 cc146-7W
Dr. Mawhinney

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services, further to his reply to the hon. Member for Peterborough of 29 April, what are the other measures which he plans to take as well as alerting the public to the dangers of smoking.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

In developing a comprehensive strategy to reduce the prevalence of smoking-related disease I shall wish to take into account the outcome of the current negotiations between the Government and the tobacco industry on what should follow the existing voluntary agreement. It would be premature to put forward detailed plans before these negotiations are completed but I refer my hon. Friend to my speech in the debate on smoking and health on 9 May, in which I drew attention to some of the matters on which we are most determined to make progress.—[Vol. 984, c. 778–89.]
