HC Deb 24 June 1980 vol 987 cc104-5W
Mr. John Fraser

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many recommendations for minimum periods of detention have been made over the last 10 years where a defendant has been convicted of the murder of a police officer; and in how many cases no such recommendation has been made.

Mr. Whitelaw

Ten persons have been convicted of the murder, in the period 1970 to 1979, of a police officer. The trial judge made a recommendation under section 1(2) of the Murder (Abolition of Death Penalty) Act 1965 for the minimum period of detention in seven of these cases. In three cases no recommendation was made.
