HC Deb 04 June 1980 vol 985 cc768-9W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many National Health Service mental hospitals are in use in England and Wales; what is the name of each; how many staff are employed in each; what is the cost to public funds of employing the staff in each; and how many inmates occupy places in each hospital.

Sir George Young

Information on staff expenditure at individual hospitals is not available centrally and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost. Information on the other aspects mentioned is contained in the publications " The facilities and services of mental illness and mental handicap hospitals in England 1975 " and " Mental illness and mental handicap hospitals and units in Wales: Statistics 1975–1976", copies of which are available in the Library. I regret that more up-to-date information is not yet available.
