HC Deb 02 June 1980 vol 985 cc609-10W
Mr. Russell Johnston

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will take action to safeguard public investment and jobs in the Northpress project in Inverness, which has been placed in jeopardy by the continuing failure to reach agreement with the Society of Graphical and Allied Trades.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

I am sorry that objections by SOGAT to the North-press proposed printing methods have so far prevented that company from operations in Inverness. This is not a matter in which my right hon. Friend can intervene; the issues involved must be resolved by negotiation between the company and the unions concerned. I very much hope that agreement will be reached soon because the company's business will benefit the Highlands generally and will provide valuable new em-poyment in Inverness.
