HC Deb 02 June 1980 vol 985 cc496-7W
Imports Mr. Whitlock

asked the Secretary of State for Trade (1) what was the percentage increase in the volume of United Kingdom imports from Portugal, Greece and Spain between 1976 and 1979;

(2) what was the percentage increase in the volume of United Kingdom imports from the Mediterranean associate countries, other than Portugal, Greece and Spain between 1976 and 1979.

Mr. Parkinson

Estimates of the volume of United Kingdom imports from particular countries or groups of countries are not available. Data in value terms are published in the Overseas Trade Statistics of the United Kingdom, which is available in the Library.

Mr. Whitlock

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what limit on the volume of imports into the United Kingdom of knitted underwear products was agreed between the EEC and Spain for 1979; and what was the actual volume of these imports for that year.

Mr. Parkinson

I will reply to the hon. Member as soon as possible.

Mr. Whitlock

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what limit on the volume of imports into the United Kingdom of spun synthetic fabric was agreed between the EEC and Portugal for 1979; and what was the actual volume of these imports for that year.

Mr. Parkinson

Portugal agreed to limit her exports of woven spun synthetic fabric to the United Kingdom in 1979 to 3,052 tonnes, though this figure could be increased by use of the flexibility provisions in the agreement. Actual imports in 1979, of 3,458 tonnes, were within these flexibility provisions.

Mr. Whitlock

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what limit on cotton yarn imports by the United Kingdom from Turkey was indicated by the EEC to Turkey for 1979; and what were the actual imports of cotton yarn from Turkey that year.

Mr. Parkinson

In 1979 the Community advised Turkey of a level below which safeguard action would not be taken against her exports of cotton yarn to the United Kingdom. This level was 2,940 tonnes. Since Turkey was not prepared to restrict her exports to this level, a quota of 428 tonnes was imposed for the period between 30 November and 31 December 1979. Actual imports in 1979 were 5,375 tonnes; despite this, the global ceiling for imports of cotton yarn in 1979 was not breached.
