asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many municipal swimming pools have been constructed in each year in the period 1970 to 1979; and how many are planned for construction in each of the next three years.

The number of swimming pools provided by local authorities and opened in each year was as follows:

1970 7
1971 6
1972 10
1973 7
1974 9
1975 7
1976 3
1977 1
1978 3
1979 1

These figures exclude swimming pools provided in schools and other educational establishments.

The provision to be made in future years is a matter for decision by individual local authorities within the resources available to them.
