HC Deb 28 July 1980 vol 989 c465W
Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Prime Minister if she will make a statement on the state of the jute industry in Dundee; and if she will introduce a policy of selective import controls to assist it.

The Prime Minister

The Dundee jute industry is going through a very difficult phase, and there has been a sharp fall in employment. However, I am well aware of the importance of the industry to the area. Our imports of the most sensitive jute products from India and Bangladesh, the major supplying countries, are already subject to import controls, or to potential controls, under agreements with the European Community.
