§ Dr. Roger Thomasasked the Secretary of State for Social Services what conditions and restrictions govern and control the use of the preparation hexachlorophene in the United Kingdom; and which preparations containing this product are available on doctors' prescription only.
§ Dr. VaughanHuman medicines containing hexachlorophene may be recommended only for uses specified in product licences granted under the Medicines Act 1968. They are permitted on general sale only if the level of hexachlorophene does not exceed 0–1 per cent. Where the level is greater but does not exceed 2 per cent. for soaps, 0–1 per cent. for aerosols, or 0–75 per cent. for preparations other than soaps or aerosols, availability is only from pharmacies. Yet higher levels are available only on prescription. Products not on general sale must be labelled "Not to be used for babies" or with a warning that the product is not to be administered to children under two years except on medical advice; they must also be labelled "For external use only".
