asked the Minister for the Civil Service if she will give for her Department, and so far as possible for each of its associated public bodies, the cost of foreign travel, including accommodation and subsistence and entertainment by Ministers and civil servants, the cost of shorthand typists and the cost of non-employee advisers, on a similar basis to the categories of Select Committee expenditure included in the Estimates of the House of Commons, Class XIII-A and itemised in the reply of the right hon. Member for Middlesbrough (Mr. Bottomley) to the hon. Member for Aberdeen, South (Mr. Sproat), Official Report, 9 July, c. 212.

The estimated expenditure in the financial year 1980–81 by the Civil Service Department, including the Civil Service Pay Research Unit, on the lines of the categories itemised in the reply from the right hon. Member for Middlesbrough, is as follows:

(2) Foreign travel by civil servants 100,000
(3) United Kingdom travel by Ministers 30,000
(4) United Kingdom travel by civil servants 862,000
(5) Entertainment by Ministers 7,500
(6) Entertainment by civil servants 14,000
(7) Salaries and wages of secretaries and typists 1,665,000
(8) Cost of non-employee advisers 18,000
