HC Deb 07 July 1980 vol 988 c55W
Mr. Cryer

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many Tornado aircraft have now been built; how many have been test flown; how many have been lost; and what is the cost of these losses.

Mr. Pattie

Twenty six Tornado aircraft, including 16 prototype and pre-series aircraft engaged in the development programmes, have flown in the three participating countries. A further 20 production aircraft are physically complete and are in various stages of ground testing prior to acceptance flight testing. Two aircraft, both prototypes, have been lost. It is not possible to isolate the cost of these losses, but both aircraft had completed a high proportion of the tasks allocated to them.
