HC Deb 07 July 1980 vol 988 cc65-6W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services, pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for Wolverhampton, North-East on 4 June, if he will consider issuing reconditioned invalid vehicles to 16-year-old disabled youths and girls who cannot benefit from Mot-ability; and how many re-usable three-wheelers were not reconditioned before being stored.

Mr. Prentice

As I indicated in my reply to the hon. Member's question on 4 June—[Vol. 985, c.769–70]—we expect to need all the re-usable vehicles we have in store as replacements for three-wheelers currently in service.

One thousand one hundred vehicles were not reconditioned before being sent to store. Many of these vehicles have been specially adapted to suit the particu- lar needs of severely disabled individuals and not all are suitable for general issue.

Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many reconditioned invalid vehicles, petrol-powered and electric-powered, have been held by his Department in each year since 1976; and how many have been re-issued in each year since 1976.

Mr. Prentice

The information is not available but the following estimates have been made.

Number of vehicles becoming available for re-issue in the year ended:

31 March 1978 2,200 140
31 March 1979 1,800 80
