§ Mrs. Renée Shortasked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) on what grounds a woman holding British nationality can be refused treatment under the National Health Service;
67W(2) if a man holding British nationality will be refused free treatment under the National Health Service if he is married to a foreign national living abroad at the time of his request for treatment.
§ Dr. Vaughan[pursuant to his reply, 19 June 1980, c. 637–38]: I wish to give the following further information.
The fact that a person is working in this country makes that person eligible to use the NHS only if he or she has come here legitimately for the purpose of taking employment. Eligibility based on employment does not extend to persons who have entered illegally or whose employment is incidental to a visit for some other purpose.
