HC Deb 07 July 1980 vol 988 cc64-5W
Mr Freeson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list those local authorities which have frozen expenditure in the current year on aids and adaptations for homes for the disabled.

Mr. Prentice

Information about current expenditure by individual local authorities on particular social services is not collected centrally.

Mr. Freeson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what steps he is taking to ensure that sufficient resources are made available for those elderly and disabled people who need special aids and adaptations to their homes.

Mr. Prentice

Local authorities have powers to undertake or to provide assistance to elderly and disabled people with adaptations to housing and to provide aids. Health authorities may also provide aids.

These authorities are affected by the need for restraint in public expenditure and it is the Government's view that they are best placed to judge their own needs and priorities.
