§ Mr. Wallerasked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on the likely input by the Government towards the costs of compensatory events at home and abroad involving governing bodies of sport not going to the Moscow summer Olympics.
§ Mr. MonroOnly the equestrian and hockey sports have so far indicated they 747W are to be involved in such events. The British Equestrian Federation is to stage a dressage event at Goodwood from 6–10 August in which 10 major equestrian countries are likely to be participating. British teams will also compete in a show-jumping event to be held in Rotterdam from 13–17 August and in a three-day event in Fontainebleau from 21–24 August. Detailed costings are not yet complete but the overall Government contribution is unlikely to exceed £120,000.
The Great Britain women's hockey team has accepted an invitation to take part in a compensatory tournament in Philadelphia, United States, in October. But even a preliminary estimate of costs is not yet available.
If necessary, parliamentary approval will be sought to a supplementary estimate later in the year. Any changes that may be required to Departmental cost limits will be announced in due course.
