HL Deb 04 July 1980 vol 411 cc841-2WA
Lord CHITNIS

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, since there is no British diplomatic representative at all based in either El Salvador or Nicaragua and only a Consulate in Guatemala and in view of the obvious importance of Central America to British interest in the region (which includes Belize), they will now consider re-establishing a small diplomatic mission in Managua in the near future.

The SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN and COMMONWEALTH AFFAIRS (Lord Carrington)

Financial and manpower constraints make it difficult at present to reopen a small mission in Managua desirable though that would be. For the time being our Ambassador in San José will continue to be accredited to Managua and San Salvador, but we shall of course keep our representation in Central America under review.
