§ The Prime MinisterNo; the size and the allocation of the defence budget must be decided in the light of the needs of national security and our NATO commitments. However, many Service men are recruited from assisted areas and a significant proportion of direct civilian employment opportunities occur in them. A substantial number of jobs are also sustained by defence equipment contracts placed in areas of high unemployment.
