HC Deb 22 January 1980 vol 977 c124W
36. Mr. Alexander

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will consider seeking the abolition of the Retail Trades (Non-Food) Wages Council (Great Britain).

Mr. Jim Lester

The continuing need for any particular wages council is kept under constant review. The lack of adequate alternative negotiating machinery and the relatively low level of pay in the retail non-food trades justify the continuation of this wages council at present.
