HC Deb 14 January 1980 vol 976 c559W
Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department why it is necessary to classify as restricted the clinical details concerning drug treatment to prisoners.

Mr. Brittan

Information about clinical treatment given to specific prisoners is not subject to a security classification. But since personal details are involved, such information is not disclosed without the written consent of the prisoner concerned.

Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department when was the first time the sex drug Benperidol was used on prisoners; and if this was before it received its product licence.

Mr. Brittan

Benperidol was first prescribed by a doctor working in a prison in 1971 after the Committee on Safety of Drugs had authorised the manufacturers to dispense it on the prescription of any registered medical practitioner. The product licence was issued in July 1973.
