HC Deb 14 January 1980 vol 976 c674W
Mr. Shersby

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what discussions have taken place with the European Economic Community Commission concerning the introduction of nutritional labelling of food products; what proposals have been put forward as to the form in which information on ingredients should be presented; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Wiggin

There have been no discussions on nutritional labelling in general, but the EEC directive on foods for particular nutritional uses (77/94/ EEC) provides for certain nutritional information to be displayed on the labels of dietary and infant foods.

The EEC directive on the labelling, presentation and advertising of foodstuffs (79/112/EEC) provides for the listing of ingredients on the labels of most foodstuffs.

Proposals to implement these directives will be issued shortly, for discussion with all the interests concerned.
