§ Mr. Shersbyasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what discussions have taken place with the European Economic Community Commission concerning the introduction of nutritional labelling of food products; what proposals have been put forward as to the form in which information on ingredients should be presented; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. WigginThere have been no discussions on nutritional labelling in general, but the EEC directive on foods for particular nutritional uses (77/94/ EEC) provides for certain nutritional information to be displayed on the labels of dietary and infant foods.
The EEC directive on the labelling, presentation and advertising of foodstuffs (79/112/EEC) provides for the listing of ingredients on the labels of most foodstuffs.
Proposals to implement these directives will be issued shortly, for discussion with all the interests concerned.
